£7,500

SOLD

An early 19th century Empire Period mahogany tric trac table, the top, with mahogany veneered borders and set with a leather writing surface and a baize underside for card games, removes to reveal and veneered recess with ebony and ivory inlaid backgammon surface, with two drawers at either end for playing counters, the whole raised on square tapering legs and fitted with brass sabots.

This table retains a set of early nineteenth century boxwood and stained boxwood backgammon counters.

Tric trac tables belong to the luxury class of French Empire furniture. Using the finest mahogany and ebony veneers, this piece would have kept nobles and wealthy merchants busy into early hours of the morning as they gambled huge stakes at backgammon and cards. There are countless stories of estates won and lost, playing at tables such as this.
