A Pair of 18th Century Landscapes – Town & Country

£2,500

SOLD

A pair of late 18th century landscapes, the first depicting a fortified city at dusk; the second a classical landscape.

Dimensions include frames.

This pair of views was painted at the end of the 18th century by an unknown artist in the manner of Francesco Guardi (October 5, 1712 – January 1, 1793). Guardi celebrated city views and the surrounding lagoon countryside in the Onirico painting tradition where detail is subordinate to mood and a crepuscular light is predominant.

Paintings such as these mark the transition from the detailed schemes typical of Canaletto and Poussin, toward a romanticised representation of reality which infiltrated the entire artistic movement at the turn of the 19th century.
