Thomas Hudson (1701-1779)

Portrait of Robert Monypenny (1718-1772)

Oil on canvas; signed and dated 1761 and inscribed; held in a period giltwood frame

Provenance: Great Maytham Hall, Kent and Pitmilly House, Fife; by family descent

Robert Monypenny was the son of Captain James Monypenny and Mary Gybbon who were married in May 1714. James Monypenny was the nineteenth generation of the family and had a successful naval career with the resulting prize money forming the basis of his fortune. Due to this, shortly after his marriage he was able to purchase the ancient Maytham Estate in Kent and commence the building of Maytham Hall in 1714. He died seven years later leaving the majority of the house to be completed by Robert who had the hall finished in the Neo-Classical style, symmetrical constructed with two wings. After a fire in 1893, the house was redesigned by Sir Edwin Lutyens in an early Neo-Georgian manner.

Robert Monypenny married Mary Dent in June 1757 at St.Martin’s-in-the-Fields, London. They had no children so the family estates passed to his brother James on his death in 1772. The ancestral seat was Pitmilly House in Fife, Scotland which was to remain with the family until the twentieth century; the advancement of the family in England also resulted in property in London and the country seat of Maytham. Robert appears to have been a conscientious man and his will completed in 1769 is both thorough and generous. This fine portrait, and that of his wife, by Hudson are specifically mentioned, and have remained in the family until very recently.

The legend surrounding the origins of the family name are that Malcolm III Cænnmor, King of Scotland, being obliged to flee after his father Duncan the Gracious was killed by Macbeth in 1040, found refuge with a wealthy French merchant named James Dauphin. When the King sought to recover his Kingdom, he asked his friend for a few pennies, whereupon James Dauphin replied, “Not a few pennies but many pennies”. His two sons also fought alongside the monarch on the field of battle and afterwards, in gratitude, the family were gifted the lands of Pitmilly, Fife.

Thomas Hudson was a hugely successful and popular portrait painter of the mid-eighteenth century. He trained under Jonathan Richardson, later marrying his daughter. He had many artistic friends including William Hogarth, Allan Ramsay and Francis Hayman and travelled to France, Holland and Flanders with both Hogarth and Hayman in 1748, and to Italy with the sculptor Louis-Francois Roubilliac in 1752. Having established his own portrait-painting practice in London, he became increasingly fashionable and took in many pupils including Wright of Derby and Joshua Reynolds. He largely retired from painting by the late 1750s particularly with the rise in popularity of the type of portraiture expounded by his one time pupil Reynolds. Therefore this portrait of Robert Monypenny represents a very late commission for him and as such is particularly sensitively painted and proudly signed.

William Broome (1838-1892)

War Ships Off The Coast of Dover. Circa 1860

Oil on canvas; signed with monogram lower left; held in a period style gilded frame

Provenance: Capt. Denys Brook-Hart (1916-1982), The Old Customs House Galleries, Lymington; bought by the novelist Leslie Thomas (1931-2014) in 1980, and then by family descent.

This impressive work by the Ramsgate based painter William Broome displays his typical knowledge and understanding of the ways of the sea. The principal vessel commanding the central focus of the composition is a 50-gun ship of the line, majestically cutting through the waves in a diagonal path. It appears to be summertime with a relatively calm sea, troubled only by an occasional stiff breeze. These deft touches gracefully animate the arrangement which could so easily, in a lesser hand, appear stiff and static. Broome brings a grandeur to the subject with a fine balance of colour, particularly in rendering the shadowy depth of the sea in blue-green tones.

Aside from the obvious artistic merit it portrays the scene is one, almost certainly, based on real observation. Broome was a stickler for realism and around the time this was painted, Kent as a county shared in a massive new national scheme of defence construction. This was a reaction to a perceived challenge from France by Napoleon III. Reinforcing a British programme to build a new ironclad fleet the coastal defences were modernised and at Dover new batteries were built on the Castle cliffs. Regular patrols of war ships strengthened the defences further as the Royal Navy maintained a rigorous presence to ward off the potential enemy. Broome living at Ramsgate, just further along the coast would have been witness to this naval activity and was clearly inspired to document it in a dignified manner.

This painting was once owned by Capt. Denys Brook-Hart (1916-1982), a leading specialist in marine paintings of the nineteenth century. In the 1970s and early 1980s he did much to broaden our knowledge of the work of William Broome and raise the status of the artist, discovering a number of his works in obscurity and re-establishing his reputation as a serious painter of maritime pictures.

Francis William Wilkin

Portrait of Capt. Lord Edward Crofton (1806-1869)

Chalks on paper; held in period maple frame

Provenance: By family descent

Edward Crofton was the son of the Hon. Sir Edward Crofton, 3^rdBaronet of Mote Park, Co. Roscommon, Ireland and Lady Charlotte, daughter of John Stewart, 7^th Earl of Galloway. He was educated at Charterhouse and joined the army in the 81^st Foot as an ensign, later transferring to a Captaincy in the 7^th Hussars. He married in October 1833, Georgina, daughter of Henry Paget, 1^st Marquess of Anglesey, Colonel-in-Chief of Crofton’s regiment. He succeeded his father in the baronetcy in 1816 and the following year he inherited the barony of Crofton on the death of his grandmother. After leaving the army he gravitated towards politics, being elected an Irish Representative Peer in 1840. He went on to serve in the Conservative administrations of the Earl of Derby and Benjamin Disraeli as a Lord-in-Waiting (government whip in the House of Lords) in 1852, from 1858-59 and from 1866-68.

The artist Francis Wilkin entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1815 and was encouraged by both Benjamin West and Sir Thomas Lawrence, whose influence is clearly seen in this portrait of Crofton as a young Captain. He appears to have gained certain popularity by drawing portraits on a large scale in chalk; striking and grand these essentially monotone depictions of personality stand out as distinctive works. Perhaps influenced by Lawrence’s own drawings on canvas, Wilkin produced a fair few indicating that there was a keen market for such pictures, contrasting with his more conventional oils. He regularly exhibited until 1841 and had a distinguished clientele with some aristocrats commissioning many portraits of their extended families. Crofton’s father-in-law, Henry Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey, was painted by Wilkin around 1825 and it is quite likely that this association led to the creation of the dashing portrait presented here.

Examples of these large chalk drawings can be found in country house collections including the Earls Spencer at Althorp, the Marquesses of Anglesey, the Marquesses of Sligo, and several National Trust properties, including Felbrigg Hall, Norfolk.

A View of Arundel Castle. Oil on canvas in period frame.

Dimensions refer to outer framed size.

Captain William Frederick Longstaff (1879–1953) was an Australian painter and war artist known for his works commemorating those who died in the Great War.

Longstaff was born in Ballarat, Victoria. He was educated at Grenville College, Ballarat, studying art at the Ballarat School of Mines. He also received some private tuition before joining the military and serving in the Boer War with the South African Light Horse. He was a cousin of the portrait artist Sir John Longstaff.

Upon his return to Australia, Longstaff continued to paint and teach art. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at the outbreak of the First World War and was injured in the Gallipoli campaign. In October 1915 he joined a remount unit, serving in France and Egypt, before being evacuated to England in 1917. In England, he started to draw again and was trained in the art of camouflage. During his time in Egypt, Longstaff made images of the ANZAC Mounted Division and the other units. Upon his appointment as an Official War Artist in 1918 he produced many works during the final campaigns of the Western Front.

Following the war, Longstaff continued in his art and turned many of his sketches into paintings. Even after military service, he remained in England, eventually settling in Sussex. From the late-1920s, he made return trips to the battlefields of France and Belgium painting haunting images in a spiritualist style. Among these later works is Menin Gate at Midnight (1927), arguably his most famous, that depicts the ghostly figures of soldiers marching past the monument. The painting toured Australia in 1928–29 where it was viewed by record crowds. It is now housed in the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. In December 2000, Menin Gate at Midnight left the War Memorial on loan to the National Gallery of Australia, the first time it had left the memorial since its installation there in 1941.

The present picture was painted during Longstaff’s time in Sussex and depicts the well loved view of Arundel in the South Downs, showing the town above the river Arun; its famous castle shown in a warm haze before a vivid summer sky.

After William Hogarth

A Midnight Modern Conversation

Oil on canvas; held in a period style frame.

Dimensions refer to outer size of frame.

William Hogarth’s ‘A Midnight Modern Conversation’ was one of his most popular earlier works and a superb example of the influence of Dutch genre painting on the artist. Indeed the many pirated engraved copies contributed to the rapid increase of Hogarth’s fame in Europe, particularly in France and Germany. For a time the original painting was considered to be that which is in the collections at Yale, but opinion has changed and as such the original is now considered lost.

Unlike the version at Yale the painting presented here derives directly from Hogarth’s own engraving of the subject published in 1733, and is extremely faithful to the original print in both composition and size. The artist has been quite detailed and thorough in his rendition, evoking well the Hogarthian characteristics of the assembled company and presenting us with a picture probably as close as possible to Hogarth’s original oil.

The scene takes place in St John’s Coffee House, Shire Lane, Temple Bar, and portrays the final throes of a raucous evening of drinking, debate, and mild debauchery among a large group of men. The characters, exhibiting the various degrees of inebriation, are gathered around a large oval table and have been variously identified, with a number likely to have been Hogarth’s own friends and acquaintances. At centre, the broadsword fighter James Figg, present in a number of Hogarth’s scenes, has fallen from his chair, smashing the bottle he carries in his left hand. The gentleman who spills the contents of another bottle on the prostrate Figg is usually identified as Ranby, Hogarth’s doctor-friend. To the extreme right, a politician attempts to light his pipe with a candle stick, mistakenly setting alight his coat sleeve by mistake. The man next to him clutches at his face, either gripped by headache or in preparation to be violently sick onto the floor. At the centre back, four men gather around the punchbowl. The one idly ladling at the punch is likely the parson, Cornelius Ford, a cousin of Dr Johnson. At the far left, another friend of Hogarth’s, the bookbinder Chandler, sits in an attitude of melancholy, wearing a white turban and smoking a long pipe, while another, leaning back on his chair, has fallen asleep with his mouth open, his wig falling back to reveal his baldness. The scene is strewn with broken bottles and discarded pipes, whilst the clock and snuffed candles hint at the approaching dawn.

William Hogarth (1697-1764) was born in London in humble surroundings. After apprenticeship to a goldsmith, he began to produce his own engraved designs in about 1710. He later took up oil painting starting with small portrait groups and later going on to create a series of paintings satirising contemporary customs of which the first was The Harlot’s Progress and perhaps the most famous The Rake’s Progress. His engravings were so plagiarised that he lobbied for the Copyright Act of 1735, commonly referred to as ‘Hogarth’s Act,’ as a protection for writers and artists. During the 1730s Hogarth also developed into an original painter of life-sized portraits and created the first of several history paintings in the grand manner. He was much admired and other artists did well by copying his style and compositions.
