An Early 19th Century Empire Period Walnut Console Table

A fine Empire Period console table, the rare fossil marble top supported upon a walnut base, having double column supports mounted with finely chased brass capitals and socles to the front side above a shaped plinth base.

Bearing the label of a former 19th century owner – a professor of Lyon University.

While the form of this console table is typical of early Empire design, the cluster column supports are a rare feature. They show the clear influence of Roman architecture which was embraced by cabinet makers at this time. It has a monumental appeal as a result. This table would have graced a grand entrance hall in an important house or sat beneath a large mirror in a salon. The use of walnut links it to a provincial city such as Lyon (pieces made in Paris were more typically constructed using mahogany).
